I's say this book is just average. No biggie. The quilters have an annual tradition of gathering Thanksgiving leftovers and having a potluck on the Friday after the holiday. This is the "Quilter's Holiday," because they all bring projects to work on as Christmas gifts. On this particular "Quilter's Holiday," they get snowed in. Well -- some of them do and a couple of them venture out and have an adventure in getting back. Each quilter has her own "personal drama" doing on while the snowstorm continues. Loose ends are drawn together at the end and all is well. I have mixed views on this book and would really give it 2.5 stars. I was immediately attracted by the little hardback old fashioned style of the book, the cover design and of course the title and especially liked the block patterns with their names illustrated in the book ends, as this helped understand the many references in the text to the different patchwork patterns. It is the first book I have read in this series and I was slow to grasp the nature of the Elm Creek community - was it a commune, school, community centre? There seemed too many characters to unravel, too much narrative and introspection and not enough dialogue and plot. It was typically American in its philosophy of sharing emotions - something I cannot quite see in a similar British sewing group. I usually like the technique of introducing different characters and then bringing them together, but here I soon got bored and whipped through some chapters. I almost gave up on it. The sniping between Diane (who I could relate to) and Gwen was irritating and I would have liked some indication of the age of Anna - I think she was younger than I first thought. However towards the end I began to warm to Sarah, expecting twins with the prospect of her husband working away from home, and to Gretchen. A warm cosy book on the theme of friendships and traditions where all ended happily. I am tempted enough to look for other books in this series.
Do You like book A Quilter's Holiday (2009)?
A really stupid novel. It required no concentration, and certainly no intellectual effort at all.

Good, short read. I didn't see any recipes I wanted to try though.

It's a sweet series with likable characters but not riveting.
