About book A Questionable Client (2000)

I recently re-read A Questionable Client in preparation for the new Kate Daniels novel. The questionable client in question is, naturally, Saiman, and this novella describes their first meeting. Saiman has been a bad, bad boy and stolen something precious from a group of Russian Volvhs. Something, as well as someone, they want back... badly. Oh yes, Saiman is his charming, disturbing and unrepentant self right from the get-go. As a result, the Norse frost gigant/shapeshifter turns out to be a difficult body to guard. So difficult, that he has, in fact, been chained to the bed by his first body guard team. (And how fitting is that for a sexually deviant shapeshifter, lol!?) I can see why he would find Kate's selfless, stubborn personality, and refusal to submit to his sexual advances intriguing. For me, this novella marks the start of a wonderful relationship, or at least; wonderful storyline. This may be my Norwegian ancestry talking, but the Kate Daniels series would quite simply not be the same without him;-) A Questionable Client is the prequel to the Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews. I actually just read this for the first time after having read the entire series and it was kind of fun to go back to the beginning of the series. As the reader and a fan of the series already, it was cool to be able to see how much Kate changed over the course of the books. The prequel takes place prior to everything she’s had to go through in the series, even before Curran walked into her life. The mystery of this prequel actually involves one of my favorite characters from the series – Saiman. He’s an arrogant shit but I like him. Honestly, as the series progressed and you learn why he’s so whacked in the head, you start to have a love of sorts for him so going back to the beginning and witnessing their first meeting was all kinds of awesome. Since this is a prequel, it is short and so my review will be too. I don’t want to give too much away. Even if you’ve read the entire series but missed this, it is totally worth going back and reading this. A Questionable Client is available in Dark and Stormy Nights and Magic Graves. I happened to purchase Dark and Stormy Nights. The difference between the two is who the other authors are featured in the anthology. Magic Graves is Ilona Andrews and Jeaniene Frost. Dark and Stormy Nights is Ilona Andrews, Jim Butcher, Rachel Caine, Vicki Pettersson, Carrie Vaughn, Deidre Knight, Lilith Saintcrow, Shannon K. Butcher, and P.N. Elrod.Overall, I am giving A Questionable Client 5 stars – even though there was no Curran.
