In addition to the short stories featuring popular 1920's detective Phryne Fisher, this volume includes a few recipes and illustrations of her hats, shoes, and of course her adorable self. Almost all are set in Australia, and include Phryne thwarting a blackmailer, finding a lost hat, lusting after several young men, and solving a robbery at a carnival. For fans, these stories date from before Phryne adopted her two daughters. This is an enjoyable collection of short stories in which Phryne Fisher solves some intriguing mysteries - not just murder. There is also some interesting information about how the character came to be created. Phryne receives a proposal of marriage, wonders whether she should reveal what she knows to the police and has an assortment of likely and unlikely characters drop dead in front of her - sometimes in her own home.If - like me - you have just raced through the rest of the series and are suffering withdrawal symptoms then this is an enjoyable read. If you haven't read any of the series then this collection of short stories could be a good place to start as it will give you a taste of the world inhabited by this delightful character.They are well written and well constructed short mysteries in which the detail is the key to the solution. If you like your crime and mystery stories with an intriguing background and well crafted characters and plots then give this book a try.
