About book A Pizza To Die For. Chris Cavender (2012)
This is the third book in the pizza series. They are light. They are fun. They make me want to eat pizza. But I could live off pizza so that isn't surprising. I do have a slight bone to pick. In almost every cozy mystery series I have read, in the first book some murder happens where our heroine/hero is the main suspect. Because he/she is in the cross hairs of the 1. obviously incompetent police 2. harried police who are too busy solving other crimes to search for another suspect in this case or 3. the chief of police who used to date the heroine in high school and now seems bitter and out to get her--ew, massive run on sentence. ANYWAY. Because of one of the aforementioned reasons or something quite similar, our intrepid hero/heroine is forced into sleuthing to clear his/her own name. Subsequent books usually have the hero/heroine pulled into sleuthing again to clear the name of a loved one or good friend.However, Cavender does not fall for this cozy mystery formula. In every book so far, and in the next book at least according to the book flap, Eleanor is the suspect. I think it book 2 it was only fleeting. And in this book, people did not leave her pizza restaurant in droves because of the scandal. But I have to confess, even though I like the books, or want to like them, I'm a little tired of Eleanor ALWAYS being the one that Chief of Police Kevin Whoever calls in for questioning. By this book, they have reached detente. So I don't know that she was ever seriously in danger of getting hauled into jail.But eventually, if this continues, someone is going to HAVE to think that where there is smoke there is fire. If Ellie is always a Top Suspect, maybe it's because she is a Top Murderer?I know Timber Ridge is supposed to be a small town. Heck I live in a small town. But in a short list of suspects, Eleanor does not need to always be on that list. I know, a few accusations doth not a murderer make, but in a small town it might as well do. I know I'm rambling. But come on Chris Cavender, you can get Ellie and Maddy involved in the hunt for a murder with out her being a suspect, even temporarily. Just something that has annoyed me. I'll be quiet now. I've got to start book 4, Rest in Pizza anyway. I liked this book a lot to the point of giving it 5 stars precisely because it's more of the same. Eleanor Swift is yet again a suspect. She's the definite Usual Suspect. She most solve the case to survive and drag her business to survival. So she's more motivated than the usual pro super sleuth and it's worth reading how she uncovers her culprit or how the murderer feels the heat so much that he/she uncovers herself out of urgency. This is the book that made me see a pattern for guessing identities in this series. One of the books I'm most likely to re read.
