About book A Parisiense: O Guia De Estilo De Ines De La Fressange (2010)
Parisian ChicBy Ines de la FressangeReview by Sareena DubeyAs the weather warms up and we come out from our winter hibernation, Ines de La Fressange’s book Parisian Chic is the perfect read. The book is a critic and appreciation of modern French fashion. The author combines the strict world of Parisian fashion with humorous anecdotes. This makes the book light-hearted and enjoyable to read. The author made me feel as if I was walking the streets of Paris, observing the fashionable Parisians walking by. “ Better one pair of really beautiful shoes than a roomful of duds”(Fressange40). This is an example of how the author combines humor with style pointers on high fashion. One of the main reasons I found this book enjoyable was that the author was both informative and witty. The way she wrote the book made it seem as if she was having a conversation with me. Fressange does a fine job of describing the countless components of a Parisian outfit. Instead of making the style pointers mundane, she spices up the pointers using amusing illustrations and humor. Through her explanations, she helps one emulate the Parisian style. This allows the reader to learn the numerous fashion rules of Paris while enjoying a hearty chuckle. The book is clever and insightful but is also completely practical. One way the book was informative was by expressing what is considered to be unfashionable in Paris. The book explains how coordinated outfits from head to toe is a crime of fashion, saying “ Coordination is a crime. A clever mix of chic and cheap hits the jackpot when it comes to dressing á la Parisienne”(Fressange12). The book also explains how to put together a Parisian styled outfit, “ [Wear the Trench] with a twin-set, rope of pearls, straight skirt, and hair band”(Fressange26). The main objective of the book is to give the reader tools to recreate the style of the Parisian woman day to day. Through makeup tips, accessorizing pointers and clothing essentials, Fressange pulls all the elements together nicely. This gives the reader insight into how to dress like a Parisian women. This author’s account helps the reader understand why Paris is deemed one of the most prominent fashion capitals of the world. In a perfect world everyone would dress like a Parisian, stylish and effortlessly elegant. Though this goal is seemingly impossible, this book is the guide to achieving the style of the Parisian. To add a dose of Parisian style to your look, you will have to read the book. You will definitely have a laugh or two with this lesson.
Do You like book A Parisiense: O Guia De Estilo De Ines De La Fressange (2010)?
This is one of those books I only read because I was given it, sometimes this turns out to be a great way to find a gem of a book I wouldn't have picked up otherwise. However with Parisian Chic, this wasn't the case.I think you have to be really into fashion to like this book as most of it is about the best places to shop is Paris. This just wasn't interesting to me at all. And I really hated the bit that had tips for dressing your child. Children should not be interested in clothes. And if they are, it should be in something with a superhero on or a tutu. Something fun. They are children. Calling this a "youthful follie" really annoyed me. But then I don't think Ines de la Fressange would think much of me either. She would take one look at me with my all over print Disney dress(faux pas!) and leggings (major faux pas!) and say non et non! and my response to this book is non merci.

I really appreciated the fashion section of this book. Instead of making vague proclamations about how to wear stylish clothing, the author lists exact clothing ensembles, recommended wardrobe staples, and blanket faux pas. I will never forget how stunning practically every woman in Paris (particularly older women) looked when I went there, so I'm going to go with what this author advises when considering what to wear. Short sections on beauty tips and home decor were useful too. A considerable portion of the book is devoted to "where to shop" in Paris, which is great...if you plan on going there in the near future. (And if you've got a lot of cash to burn. None of these places seem particularly budget-friendly.) Great little read, and a must for any Francophile.
