About book A Modern Love Story (2000)

THIS STARTS OUT OKAY, BUT THRN IT GETS CRAZYLuc and Robbie were both foster children, and spent many years living with a great couple the Lawsons. Even when they became adults they remained close. Robbie (she's the girl) has always been in love with Luc, though he seemed oblivious to that, and Robbie didn't want to push it and lose what they did have. Then about 40% in Luc starts to realise what Robbie means to him. He is part owner in a bar, with his best friend Conrad, things are coming together for him. His business is doing well he has Robbie. Then suddenly everything in the story goes crazy. Payton a high powered lawyer meets Luc for five minutes and decides she wants him. She's prepared to do anything to get him, and I mean anything.I started to wonder if Luc actually had any brains whatsoever, why Robbie bothered with him was beyond me. His behaviour was unforgivable IMO. It's a massive turn off for me when the hero cheats. I lost all interest after that. I don't mind a bit of angst, but this far exceeded that. So what started out okay just got too ridiculous with all the melodrama and outlandish and unbelievable events that moved the story forward. A review described it as Callum and Harper meets The Opportunist. How could I resist? I basically bypassed my TBR pile consisting of probably over 50 books. You know a book is good if it's relatively short (when you think long: think Avoiding Commitment/Thoughtless/The Mighty Storm) yet the build up to the full story feels oh-so-gradual and well-developed. The Opportunist fell along this category. I really loved how the author developed Robbie and Luc's story. But now I understand why everyone hated the second part of the book. Not quite the latter 50% - maybe 30%. Melodrama much? It's like a CSI episode or something. But still I loved the first half enough to give it 4 stars. By the time you get to that part, Robbie and Luc's love story have you hooked enough that you do go all the way to the end rooting for them. I can only hope Tarryn Fisher reads this book and not go down this angle for Dirty Red! But then again, I have zero tolerance for cheating on my MCs. So if there's an excuse bordering or close to something like insanity as opposed to being just tempted or drunk or weak, I guess I'll swallow it...
