About book A Minor Inconvenience (2014)

I am seriously going to regret this tomorrow as I have a paper due on Tuesday and I really should have spent today AND Monday finishing it, but instead I spent my entire day finishing this book. Do I regret it right now? Now. But I will tomorrow when I'm flailing to finish the paper after having worked all day. But you see, this book was fantastic. I absolutely loved all of the characters. Hugh is wonderful and even though he tries so hard not to be, really is quite oblivious. And then there's Theo. Who can't love him? I had a feeling he was going to turn out to be what he ended up being when it was revealed that things were amiss with the Horse Guards, but I was still worried about everything. And Emily. I would like to imagine that, were I to be alive in that period, I would be the knowing friend aware of everything, even when others are delightfully oblivious. This truly is a wonderful book with passion, intrigue, and historical drama. I loved that Theo's house is so safe for them. It's the first book I've read where the servants can keep the secret because of their OWN secrets. I thought that was pretty brilliant, actually, and makes a lot of sense. Why wouldn't a man inclined towards men keep servants who are likewise inclined in order to keep the secret? I can't wait to read more from this author. She tugged on my heart quite a few times, but the ending was perfect. Also, I must commend the author on the vocabulary. I'm glad I was reading this on my Kindle Fire, because I was able to just tap a word and get the definition. I learned so many new words in this book that I feel smarter for having read it! An unexpected and pleasant bonus. So maybe it's not that bad that I took the day off from writing a literature paper for reading this... A sweet historical romance, A Minor Inconvenience tells us the story of Captain Hugh Fanshawe, who is back in London after being injured in battle in the Napoleonic Wars in Spain. As a consequence, he’s got a handicapped leg and a bureaucratic job in the Horse Guards. His life goes by quite easily and steady, acting as an escort for his mum and sister to the numerous social events a debutante is supposed to assist, until Colonel Theo Lindsey crashes into his life. A member of the Riffles corps, Colonel Lindsey seeks to find solace for his boredom while expecting to be received by his superior by favouring Hugh’s friendship. Soon enough, Theo and Hugh become lovers, the young and inexperienced Hugh falling inevitably for the more mature and much more experienced Theo. But things are not what they seem to be, and Hugh is soon to find out how easily it is to move from happiness to shame and despair.I have enjoyed this book. I really like the characters. Hugh is a special person. He has always felt inferior to his older brothers, who have inherited his mum’s good looks. They both enjoy privileged positions, while he sees his military career truncated by his injure and posterior disability. He feels unworthy and, though he learnt in Spain where his sexual interest lays, he doesn’t believe it is possible to fall in love and to know such thing as happiness. When he meets Theo, his first reaction is of incredulity at finding such a man can be interested in him. This is replaced by astonishment and happiness at the easy intimacy they share. But his feeling of inferiority has always been there, that’s why he finds so difficult to forgive Theo’s betrayal. It is easiest for him to believe that all was a lie, than to imagine Theo making such a mistake. As for Theo, he must be torn between his duty, fulfilling the task he was commanded to, and his inability to resist Hugh’s enthusiasm. As he gets more and more involved with the young captain, and finds out the deep feelings he harbours, he realises the magnitude of his mistake, and how difficult it is going to be to come clean and keep the younger man’s affections. Beautifully written, with an interesting plot and enough anguish to make the HEA worth the struggle, A Minor Inconvenience has everything you can ask for in a novel. Highly recommendable.
