About book A Meal With Jesus: Discovering Grace, Community, & Mission Around The Table (2011)
This book helps us to rediscover the message, mission and method of Jesus. The Son of man came to serve, give his life, seek and save the lost, but how did he do it? By eating and drinking! Eating and drinking seem so simple and yet they so deeply connect with each one of us.What more do we need to do?"Jesus didn't run projects, establish ministries, create programmes or put on events. He ate meals."Great book. Interesting book about the significance of sharing meals together. Tim Chester uses this premise to expand widely on churchly cultural significance, community building, and basically explains the gospel from the starting point of one of Jesus' meals. For me he stretched the subject a bit too much and uses the meals as a starting point for an often only mildly related discussion of church practice, theological issues or cultural criticism. This also made it a bit repetitive at times, the book feels like its basic notions could have been described in much fewer words. What Chester puts forth in this book are some quite good and interesting ideas, though. Using meals and food as a common denominator between christians and non-christians and as a way to informally practice missions is wonderful and enticing. Sometimes he gets a bit overenthusiastic and gives the impression that meals can save the world, but we'll quickly forgive him that, noticing Chester's deep passion for others (and for food).
