Jemmy carries the brass lions-head that Father left in his care, and this talisman becomes a symbol of their father's protection. The adventure is fraught with danger and difficulty, and the three children courageously meet challenge after challenge, united by familial love.This well-written story dramatizes the steely grit exhibited by colonists who first came to America, many of whom tasted the fear and disappointments that attended these fictional characters. But although their reality is often grim, a bright thread of hope runs throughout the book. Although the children are often frightened, they are always provided for just in time. It is this providential care, combined with their courage in the face of danger, that makes this such a satisfying adventure.This book is a fine read-aloud for young listeners transitioning out of picture books, and is also a good read-alone for middle readers.
Do You like book A Lion To Guard Us (1989)?

Ellie, "A Lion to Guard Us", P. 21 As much as I like all of the Clyde Robert Bulla books that I have read, this one is right up there with "The Chalk Box Kid" as my favorite. Told with the unmistakable sweetness inherent in any tome by the author, "A Lion to Guard Us" also deals with issues that are more complex than those usually found in the author's books. The historical fiction aspect of it also makes things very interesting, and Amanda, Meg and Jemmy live inside the frame of their times very well while all being very likable. They encounter cruel, horribly mean adults and adults that are kind and good, but the nature of our three winsome protagonists never changes. "A Lion to Guard Us" is highly original and creative, and does the job quite well of reaching the reader's heart. If I were to recommend only one Clyde Robert Bulla book it would probably be "The Chalk Box Kid", but this one would probably be second. I liked it very much.

This book was about a few siblings and how they had an adventure to find their father. This historical book was about their father leaving them to another land and their mother died. So they went out in search of theri father. Finally, the happy ending is when they find thei father. All throughout their journey, their father had given them a lion doornock shaped like a lion. They used that as a charm for protection. I would reccommend this book to anyone who likes historical books about adventure (although it was not that big of an adventure )
