About book A House In Fez: Building A Life In The Ancient Heart Of Morocco (2008)

Another in the popular I-bought-a-house-in-a-foreign-country mode. I know that my two weeks in Morocco barely scratched the surface of a complex culture, so I was interested in her experiences living there. Apart from the fact that renovating a house is last on my list of things I'd like to do - right up there with running a B&B - I appreciated the glimpses of daily life, obviously from an outsider's perspective. You have to like the narrator in a book like this, and Clarke was a pleasant enough companion. Meanwhile, I would return to Fez in a heartbeat. If you like reading about people who head off to foreign countries to make a life for themselves, then you'll probably enjoy this book. It's a little slow, but you will learn about the trials and tribulations of buying and renovating a house in Morocco, while also meeting an interesting cast of characters and learning a bit about the Moroccan culture. The author struck me as a little bit of a loner, very self-sufficient, and maybe that aloofness was the reason I found the book less compelling than I'd hoped. I don't know. Anyway, it wasn't a bad book - it just wasn't great, either.
