About book A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball (2012)
I don't remember how I came to purchase this book, other than I am a Dwyane Wade fan. It was interesting to me to read about D-Wade's childhood and his mother's drug problems, and the thing that I came away with in this book is that he is a good father...and I think that was exactly the purpose. Of course, there is a lot of pages dedicated to Wade's divorce from his first wife. I had to keep in the back of my mind that this was his story, and did not represent the full story. Wade didn't paint his ex-wife negatively; I felt that he was trying his best to be honest and transparent in the events and situations that led to his very nasty divorce and custody battle. If you have watched Wade on the court, then you have a pretty good idea of how this book reads. At times it is fast-paced and dizzying in its conjecture. Other times, it is a bit chaotic and (dare I say) unfocused. There are three things that were always consistent: 1) Wade's love for his children; 2) his love of the game of basketball; and 3) his commitment to stepping outside of himself for the greater good. My opinion did not change of Wade because of this book; not that it could have changed much. I am and have been a fan. What will be really interesting is if his ex-wife decides to write a book of her side of the story. I don't think Wade is as innocent as he portrays himself in the book. When something goes wrong in a marriage, both parties are to be blamed. That made me question his side of the story when it came to his ex-wife. I liked this book. It did give a very personal view into the mind of a man and the importance of being a father to his children. For that, I applaud Dwyane Wade. "Fatherhood, to me, isn't something you do for awards or acclaim. It's a privilege and a huge responsibility." ~ Dwyane Wade I thought that the book was very exciting. It gives a lot of information about him and his opinions. It talks about his life when he was growing up to winning the NBA title against OKC. (Oklahoma City Thunder) The book talks about who impacted his life and how they did it. Talks about the people who kept him motivated. The problems he had and how he fixed them. I really liked the book. I would read it again and recommend it to anyone who likes sports. The setting takes place in Miami and where he has traveled. He talks about his relationship problems and how he handles these situations. He has two children. He talks about the things he would do differently. He also talks about his religious background and how it helped him get through tuff situations. He went to Marquette University. He was drafted in the first round by the Miami Heat. He gets married to his girlfriend in high school. He talks about life, and how important it is to have a great relationship with God! I really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone that is struggling with life or loves sports.

Evidently Mr. Wade wears the number "3" for the Holy Trinity. Nice read.
