About book A Drunkard's Path (2009)

I don't can decide if I like or not this series because also the plot is interesting, I don't understand very much the character by Nell ,smart or naive, just one bit silly maybe;and Jess is one bit umoral , sure the relationship with Nell is strange: now yell to her and next moment kisses and hugs her. In this third book also Eleonor behaves strangely and treats Nell as little girl. I think that only the components of quilting circle are well portrayed and are very nice characters . However the book is good read . A Drunkard's Path is the 2nd book in the Someday Quilts series by Clare O'Donohue, set in fictional Archer's Rest in modern-day upstate New York. Nell Fitzgerald is recovering from a broken engagement, staying with her grandmother Eleanor and working in Eleanor's quilt shop. Nell is following her dream of becoming an artist, starting with an art class taught by famous artist Oliver White.Nell is also starting a relationship with police chief Jesse Duwalt. When he stands her up on their first date, she is angry and goes to confront him. She finds out he is busy investigating the murder of a young woman found in the river. At this point in the book, it stretches credulity for Nell to insist upon investigating the murder and aggravating Jesse. After a second murder close to her grandmother's house, and especially when her grandmother is romantically involved, it is easier to understand Nell would investigate, but still hard to believe she would break the law. Young character Rich seems added to the plot simply to facilitate Nell's illegal B&E, which feels contrived. However her followup on photograph clues seems realistic.Jesse is portrayed for most of the story as not competent or not trying hard enough to solve the murders, which is odd compared to his character in the first book. The final solution explains part of his odd behavior, but not entirely. Jesse is also not a key player in most events of the book, surprising after his key role in the first book. The author possibly added tension and distance between Nell and Jesse to keep the relationship developing slowly over the series.Nell's continued investigation is somewhat tedious in the middle portion of the book, however that is when the quilters teach Nell and Kennette how to create a quilt from start to finish, and it's fun to read for a quilter (perhaps not for a non-quilter mystery buff). It's odd that Nell struggles in art class and receives the comment that her artwork is stiff, yet she is able to paint a wonderful mural for her friend. Perhaps art is like that.I plan to continue reading the series, hoping for a lot more quilt details and less art.
