About book A Dog Walks Into A Nursing Home: Lessons In The Good Life From An Unlikely Teacher (2013)
A sweet, well-written memoir about the author and her dog and their experiences volunteering in a local nursing home. What I liked most about this book was the author's descriptions of and obvious affection for the varied nursing home residents she and pransky visited over the years. I related to her bemusement and appreciation for the residents and the way her observations and interactions with them enhanced her life. Hanging out with old people rules. I borrowed this book expecting it to be a warm and fuzzy shaggy dog story that would be a good vacation read. It turned out to be much more, as the author is educated in philosophy, and reflects what she learns working in the nursing home to what she has learned in her academic career. I found this book to be a thought-provoking study of what it means to confront the end of life, and also, the role of dogs to cut through all the barriers we have to seeing old and/or dying people as human beings. Highly recommended.
