The Murder, She Wrote book series is based on the characters and settings of the long-running television series starring Angela Lansbury. Each book is similar to the show, in that they are all "written" by Jessica Fletcher, along with another author.In this story, Jessica is asked by a lawyer friend in Boston to work as a jury consultant on a high-profile murder trial. But then the defendant's girlfriend -- his one alibi -- is killed. After that, the bodies start piling up, and Jessica nearly becomes one of the dearly departed herself before she breaks the case.I wish I could say I enjoyed this book. Some aspects of it worked well, and it might have made a good story under another author's hand. Donald Bain, however, is far too descriptive in his settings for what could be illustrated in a few strokes of the pen; and the first-person narrative jars to my classical-mystery preferences.
“A Deadly Judgment” was very enjoyable. I’m a sucker for law thrillers, and this one fulfilled. The characters were well-sketched and verging on three-dimensionalism (very unusual for these early books), and of course, what can I say about the setting? Donald Bain really got stuck into using Boston as a backdrop for this novel.
