About book A Crucible Of Souls (2013)

Well, it was okay. The writing isn't great, but the character development is pretty good. It is more than a little annoying that this is just a lead in to the next book. It is filled with questions that are given no answers. I found myself reading the last hundred pages fast in order to be done with it, not because it was so engrossing nor so enjoyable. That being said, I am intrigued enough to read the next book. But I won't be rushing right out to buy it. A Crucible of Souls is the coming-of-age story of a young prodigy with exceptional abilities in Sorcery. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing particularly original but still satisfying to read. Mitchell Hogan crafts the web of his story well, bringing together threads towards a satisfying and climatic ending. Although I would recommend A Crucible of Souls there are some particularly annoying aspects of the book, foremost being the editing--extremely green prose throughout the text, bad sentence structures, repetitive phrasing, ect.--all of which should have been dealt with prior to publication. Notwithstanding those faults I am looking forward to the next installment.
