About book 5 Dinge, Die Sterbende Am Meisten Bereuen (2013)
The author tells us about her personal development while working in terminal care. The stories are told quite sensitively and respectfully. Bronnie Ware shows us, how important a personal relationship, even friendship is for those in their last phase of life.However, some of the personal anecdotes of the author's life could have been left out. I liked the book a lot at the beginning, since it takes the reader to that place of saying goodbye to a loved one with a tearful smile. After a while the book somehow lost the grip on me, because it did not seem to lead me towards a wiser inner stance towards life. But it is definetly a strong reminder, to take our thoughts about a better life more serious while there is still time. This book is more about the subtitle than the title. This is less of a book about death and dying (i.e. the five regrets) than her own memoir. Ware chronicles her own journey as a palliative carer and the personal choices and experiences that both led her to that and grew out of it. While she is detailed about the patients she interacts with, her own autobiographical details are frustratingly vague, consistently and repeatedly, careening between confidence/independence and self-doubt (with side references to her dark side, bad experiences, etc)--it's almost like she doesn't want to write about any of that, though it makes up the bulk of the book (it reads as one long self-help journey/journal). Still, I enjoyed her company and the book, but it wasn't what I expected.
