About book 10 Mindful Minutes: Giving Our Children--and Ourselves--the Social And Emotional Skills To Reduce Stress And Anxiety For Healthier, Happy Lives (2011)

I don't find the photo of Goldie at the end of this book weird. (Some have opposed as much) We might choose to perceive it as a display of her own peace and contentment. I am sure she is aware of judgement. How we all struggle with it from both sides of the glass. And so I hope she simply chose the picture she liked. I think that is beautiful. Beauty is much deeper than skin. And so in authentic form and in comfort with our true selves, (flamboyant ...or not) couldn't our outwardly appearance just be for fun! She seems fun! And insightful. I don't think her looks are in contradiction to the mindfulness and contentment she shares in this book. "Stripping yourself bare and finding out what you're really made of is an important moment. Once you absorb the clarity and truth of who you are, you discover empathy and understanding to help guide your children through their own journey of self-discovery." (xx)Hawn created the MINDUp foundation after 9/11/01 and her quest to understand the power and resiliency of the human spirit. She cares so much for the well-being of children and provided the resources for the foundation to create classroom communities that foster self-awareness. It empowers kids to manage and reduce their stress and control the way they respond to the world and their environment. This book brings the philosophies and techniques to parents and childcare providers to educate the whole child by introducing reflection as an essential educational component. Learning and practicing mindfulness helps reduce stress, so one is more in control of his/her emotions and this helps within relationships, at home, school, the workplace or the world at large. "Once children feel emotionally secure, they know they are not alone in this world and have someone they can turn to. The important thing is to be vigilant, patient, and consistent so hat they are assured that they can come to you in times of crisis as well as joy. Every day you can ask yourself, 'have I helped my children understand their gifts and talents? Did I emphasize with their feelings enough? Is their something I can do or say now to strengthen the connection?'"Deal with anger, fear and sadness through imagery--1/ stop and do mindful breathing, 2/ think about all the different ways to respond, 3/try the most mindful response and see what happens. Be grateful. Practice empathy, kindness and optimism. Get enough sleep. Be fully present in the moment.
