I really liked how clearly Thorndike laid out his main points here. He frames a CEO's role as consisting of three main activities: cash generation, capital allocation, and operations. The focus here is on capital allocation as the differentiator enabling successs for the CEOs profiled in this book. What's insightful about that is that so many other business books, directly or indirectly, focus on the other two activities; cash generation (this includes many strategy and innovation books as well since they focus on top line growth) and operations.
