About book Meowmorphosis (2014)

Upon first glance those who have read the original source material (i.e. Metamorphosis) might believe this book an exercise in simple find and replace. Where it says bug, put cat; insect, feline. So on. Much like the former books from Quirk publishing, however, the general tone and voice of the original author is duplicated with striking similarity. Underlying messages only carry the narrative so far, however, and ultimately it's up to the reader to associate with various, semi-interesting feelings of disloyalty, intrusion, abandonment, and helplessness. Maybe even betrayal, since the original book and this alternate reality focus on the steadily increasing exclusion by Gregor Samsa's family. Whether it's enough to captivate a reading audience is up to each individual reader. All the requisite cat behaviors and observations are present, thoughts inside the feline mind, but it just wasn't terribly interesting to me. They can't all be home runs like PP&Z. This book is a "take" on Franz Kafka's, The Metamorphosis (where Gregor Samsa wakes up and is a roach )In this story Gregor Samsa wakes up and is a kitten/cat. His family - seem to dislike him as much as if her WERE Kafka's roach. He is locked in his room - his mother faints when she sees him - his dad ignores him, etc. But his sister does seem to like him as if her were a REAL cat.Samsa seemingly escapes this living death by entering into the world of cats. But he meets a group of also changed cats - and in Cat Court he is tried, convicted and sentenced to return to his family life. If he had been worthy of catdom, he would have defended himself to the other cats. He would have summoned all the dignity that makes a cat a cat. He would have gone forth denying the court's jurisdiction and affirming that whatever had occurred before, he was now a cat and thus beyond judgment, even by other cats. But, Gregor is essentially lacking the traits of a true cat, and can only return to his family. After his return, the family's attitude toward Samsa becomes openly hostile and violent, and that is how it ends. Similar to the Kafka's Metamorphosis Personally I didn't care much for some of the long pontifications in cat court - but that is just me
