About book Becoming Red (2012)

Wow, Neat story! A different twist on the werewolf. The setting is Ireland, not sure if this is the reason or not, but I found the language to be a tad confusing at times. I had to reread a few sentences to be sure I understood it. I had a hard time getting to know Ash but felt a connection to Connal right away. I wold have liked to see more of the all powerful grandmother but maybe that is for another book. Looking forward to book two, I need to know what happens!!! Okay...I really wanted to like this book. The book blurb sounded intriguing and I've been trying to branch out into more paranormal type stories. And the cover is AWESOME. But I just could not finish this book. I made it to Chapter 11 and was ready to toss it in the DNF pile but I went to re-read the reviews and a few people said to push through the beginning because it got better. I made it to Chapter 15 and decided the writing style isn't for me. Half the time I had no idea what was going on because these joint authors used so many metaphors and similes that I found myself continuously dragged out of the story line. Some of them made no sense to me. For example, one chapter opened with the heroine walking and the scraping of her heel on the sidewalk was 'like gunfire'. Huh? I go to a shooting range regularly with my husband and we wear protective head gear because gunfire is ridiculously loud. There is no way that a shoe scraping across the ground can be likened to gunfire. I started highlighting all of the passages that threw me for a loop and my book is a mass of yellow. I'm all for metaphors / similes where they make sense and to add interest to the story but it gets exhausting to read them in every single paragraph - sometimes every single sentence within a paragraph. Less can be best.In addition, after reading 15 chapters I should have some idea of what is going on in the story and there should be some serious action going on. Nope. Other than one interesting scene with a would be intruder and one scene with fighting wolves, there was nothing interesting going on. I really don't care to follow the protagonist through her daily routine and thinking in vague terms about a scary past. Maybe I'm right at the precipice of the story getting interesting but I've decided to cut my losses and move on. This story just isn't for me. But there were quite a few five and four stars so you might want to check it out for yourself.
