Overview

Sixth-grader Nina Tanleven knows that old Mrs. Watson's spike-roofed, dark green house is haunted. She feels the ghost as soon as she walks toward the faded porch. But when Nina climbs the stairs to look for an antique wardrobe in the tower room, she has to wonder what else the spooky mansion is hiding. Soon Nina is in the company of a ghostly crying child, a long-dead artist, and a gruesome, hypnotic painting. To break the dark spell surrounding the house, she will have to join forces with these shadowy spirits. Bruce Coville is the author of dozens of books for young readers. He has been a storyteller, teacher, and actor. It was his love for the theatre that led him to write his first book about Nina Tanleven, The Ghost in the Third Row. The feisty Nina, his favorite ghostbuster, is sure to become yours, too.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-- The ghost of a little girl waiting for her father, the father's ghost looking for his daughter, a lost painting, and a house full of antiques add up to a mystery. Ghost specialists Nina Tanleven and Chris Gurley really hadn't planned on getting involved in any more hauntings, but they can't say no when the father and daughter appeal to them for help. The two girls are resourceful and courageous while trying to unravel the secrets. Antagonists are well developed, and readers will enjoy trying to figure out the real villain's identity. Descriptive details add to the suspense. Especially powerful are the paintings that seem to come to life with an unnatural force. This is a page turner that will keep mystery buffs reading to the frightening climax and satisfactory conclusion. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA
