My Blood Approves and Fate were the first two novels Amanda Hocking self-published. In April 2010, My Blood Approves was uploaded first on the Amazon.com website. In May 2010, the book became available through Smashwords. Smashwords is an online service that makes electronic books compatible with Nook, BeBook and Kobo devices.
In only a few short months, My Blood Approves went from selling hundreds to thousands of copies. Positive reviews from bloggers helped lift the book from obscurity. The book was featured on popular blogs such as Sparkling Reviews, Smart Girls Read and Fantasy Book Reviews, which helped boost online sales.
By the end of 2011, My Blood Approves sold thousands of copies each day. The follow-up books in the series – Fate, Flutter, Wisdom, and Letters to Elise – were also bestsellers through the Kindle and Nook e-book libraries. BOOK EXCERPT
From the Introduction by Heather Wood:
"My Blood Approves" Makes Vampires Cool Again
When I first picked up My Blood Approves, I was pretty much over the vampire craze. I've read Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and watched True Blood. I thought, how could this book be any different from anything else out there? I heard buzz about the book because it became a bestseller despite being self-published and sold exclusively as an e-book.
Although the first few chapters were slow-going and the vampire reveal got teased out too long, the book is one of my personal favorites. I got sucked in (literally) to the love triangle of Jack, Peter and Alice. The idea of a soul mate who doesn't want to be with you, but doesn't want you with anyone else made the book stand out. Characters were three-dimensional, and one can easily relate to Alice. The teens in the book dressed and talked like everyday teenagers. The vampires weren't Edward Cullen clones and the romance between the characters wasn't portrayed in a melodramatic way.
